MTC responds to RTI Act petition

The usually recalcitrant Metropolitan Transport Organisation of Chennai, the monopoly bus operator has responded to a petition under the Right to Information Act, 2005 (RTI Act) seeking information on its Travel As You Please passes.

Chennairoads believes that one of the simplest solutions to improved commuting and tourist movement in Chennai is to popularise travel cards. These cards should be sold the way SIM cards, recharges and and top ups are being done, for mobile telephones.

That might be a tall ask as of now, because of MTC's 'sarkari' bent of mind. The Corporation exists to provide employment to several thousand people, not for the mobility needs of a six million population, it would appear.

Anyway, here is the link to the information provided by MTC.

I had used RTI with the traffic police department and asked for details of fines in Chennai collected in the last financial year, and in the current financial year till date. The details of fines received for different kinds of violations has been given in this document. Just thought it would be useful to you.

Hello! A very good initiative by you.
Could you please give me details of how you filed the RTI with MTC, Chennai? What is the fees? How do you pay the fees? Who do you address the application to?
The reason I ask these details is because, I too want to file an RTI application with MTC.
Thanks in advance and keep up the great work!
Regards,
Ramnath

An RTI application to MTC can be sent to the Public Information Officer. Currently, that is
Mr.M.Chandrasekhar, Company Secretary and Public Information Officer, Metropolitan Transport Corporation (Chennai) Limited,
Pallavan House, Anna Salai,
Chennai – 600 002.
The application is only a plain paper letter with from and to addresses, a subject line that states it is under RTI Act and a list of questions (the sharper and more precise, the better).
The ten rupee fee can be paid by affixing on the letter court fee stamps (available with all judicial stamp paper vendors). Send the application by Registered Post Ack Due, although MTC may not acknowledge it. That doesn't matter because the Postal Department will certify delivery later if required.
